- Does the syllabus cover skills I can practice hands-on, not just memorize?
- Can I realistically afford the cost, including any renewal requirements?
- Is there a free or lower-cost equivalent that teaches the same fundamentals?

- Foundational certifications covering broad security concepts, often a reasonable starting point.
- Role-focused certifications aligned to SOC, cloud, or engineering-style work.
- Vendor-specific certifications tied to a particular platform, useful if you know which ecosystem you'll work in.
Preparing effectively
